Ward Family Vacations

Italy 2001

St. Marks Square

Our first full day in Venice, we got up early and dressed for breakfast.  It was a great breakfast as they all were in Italy with fresh pastries and fruit.  (The pastries are to die for!)  After breakfast the tour group met to take the water taxis to St. Mark's Square and visit the Murano Glass factory.  As you traveling around the canals you get to see all of the activity of the boats coming in with the days food supply and beverages. It was early morning so quite misty but still gave a great view of the city from traveling the main canal.  Jessica below with our tour guide, Renata.

Doge's Palace "Palazzo Ducale di Venezia"

It was constructed from 1309 to 1424, designed perhaps by Filippo Calendario.  The palace is linked to the Bridge of Sighs which connects with the prison where Casanova was held.  They called it the Bridge of Sighs because as a prisoner was escorted to the inescapable prison, the two small windows were usually the last view a prisoner had of their family and they of him.

This was our first view of stepping off the boats and entering the square. In St. Mark's Square looking back.  Yes there are lots of tourists and pigeons!

Courtyard of Palace

This is the staircase used by the Doge's and for when royalty and other important guests came to the palace.  It is inlaid with gold and you cannot even with this picture understand the opulence of it.
