Lake Taupo

My first weekend there, we left out early to go to Hamilton where Dave and Jess lived for the first two years of their marriage and then went on to Lake Taupo in the Bay of Plenty. Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand and was created by the largest known volcanic eruption of the past 5,000 years. The eruption was so big the sun went hazy in China. Today, what remains is a lake the size of Singapore and the largest fresh water lake in Australasia. The official site for Lake Taupo has a lot of information on its history as well as some beautiful pictures.

Here is a webcam of the lake looking south towards the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.
