France 2002

Working at Church

The entire church sanctuary had to be tiled which was approximately 2,225 square feet.  This church was in the Savigny le Tempe region which was made up of 8 or 9 small communities that are referred to as "bedroom" communities.  There are approximately 26,000 communities in France and only 3,000 churches with most of them being Roman Catholic.  The Savigny le Tempe region has a population of approximately 80,000 people.  The Eglise Protestante Evangelique Church they were helping had approximately 125 members out of the entire community of 80,000.  The church has a lot of problems with people routinely shooting out the glass windows, but just goes ahead and fixes them and continues on.

Several of the church members took off from work and helped out at the church and the ladies of the church provided lunch each day.  The people of this church were so genuinely nice and there to help out and Dennis really enjoyed fellowshipping with them.

Dennis said he expected when he went to France that the food would be some of the best he had ever tried.  He said the French definitely do not eat the way the Southerner's do!  He said everyone carries around big loafs of French bread he nicknamed "Bat" bread because it looked like a baseball bat.  He said people just carry it without any wrapping and drop it on the counters and sometimes the floor.  He said his idea of a sandwich is fattening mayonnaise, lots of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes the works.  He said the idea of a sandwich in France is a piece of bread and a few sliced cucumbers or other thinly sliced vegetables. (Might explain why the French are so much thinner than us).
